Always ready with a pep talk, senior varsity football player John Goldthorn is a spirited leader.

“I am expecting great things to come for this team. We have been working very hard and we have been blessed with the size, speed, and the athleticism to help us get where we want to be,” Goldthorn said.

The Mineola Yellow Jackets are 5-0 in district after defeating Quitman 47-0.

“Coach Drennon set us up a tough pre-season so that we would be better prepared for whenever we get to district. We are very thankful for that,” he said.

The bleacher creatures filled the stadium with energy and noise.

“The school spirit is so much better. The pep rallies have improved tremendously and all of the fans cheering us on and supporting us gives us the motivation to push further whenever we feel like we cannot go any further,” Goldthorn said.

The team carried the Winnsboro Red Raiders into overtime, losing 30-27.

“At the beginning of the season everyone expected us to be amazing and go undefeated throughout the season, and that is an awesome feeling, so losing three games right off the bat was tough,” he said.

Since early August the team has been putting long hours to prepare for the season.

“Losing does not necessarily mean we played bad. We actually played our hearts out all three of those games, the ending just wasn’t in our favor,” he said. “But we are using that as motivation to get better and better every game, so that come district we are unstoppable,” the senior said.

The energy remains unabated.

“Our goal is to be one of the best teams to come through Mineola. And hopefully make history,” Goldthorn said.

The team faces the Prairiland Patriots at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 14 at Texas A&M-Commerce.
